Dear friends and family,
As you may already know, my mom Nataly has been recently (early November, 2008) diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. This is sad, sad news for all of us. This type of cancer is extremely difficult to battle, however, there is hope. Only about 5% of people with this diagnosis are candidates for surgical removal of the tumor, and she is fortunately in this category. We are pressing ahead with scheduling of the surgery, hopefully it will occur within 2-4 weeks, i.e. before mid December.

This is a difficult procedure, she will need a lot of strength and resolve (she has been physically weak lately) to overcome and recover, so your support will be essential. You can e-mail her at kossnata@yahoo.com, or call us at home.

Given the circumstances it is fortunate that this development happened while she is visiting with us in California. She will be treated in Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, http://www.huntingtonhospital.com. This is the most probable scenario, although while the financial details are not settled we are developing backup options for a surgery in a different country. I intend to post updates on the developments on this blog page.

You are welcome to post your comments here or contact us directly. Some of you have been asking about what help is needed, including financial. At this moment we are handling the situation ok, although any advice is of course appreciated. I am still sorting out the logistical and financial aspects, given that this will be an out-of-pocket expense, as mom’s travel insurance won’t cover the extensive surgery and post-op.

That’s it at the moment. Thanks so much to each one of you, your support is extremely important. Although the situation is challenging and life-threatening, together we should be able to pull through.

В начале ноября у моей мамы (Наталья Константиновна) был обнаружен рак поджелудочной железы. Это очень тяжелая новость. Этот тип рака плохо поддается лечению, но у нас есть надежда. Всего 5% больных являюся кандидатами на радикальную хирургическую операцию, и нам повезло – мама попадает в эту категорию. Операцию надо делать как можно скорее, желательно в течение 2-4 недель, т.е. до середины декабря.
Операция непростая, маме надо много сил и поддержки (она была заметно слаба в последнее время) чтобы пройти через операцию и выздороветь. Вы можете написать ей на kossnata@yahoo.com или позвонить нам домой.

Учитывая обстоятельства, нам повезло что всё это произошло сейчас, когда мама гостит у нас в Калифорнии. Скорее всего операция будет проходить в больнице Хантингтон Мемориал, http://www.huntingtonhospital.com. Это наиболее вероятный сценарий, но поскольку финансовые детали еще не утрясены, то мы разрабатываем запасные варианты с операцией в другой стране.

В настоящее время мы справляемся с ситуацией, хотя конечно любые советы с благодарностью принимаются. Я сейчас разбираюсь с организационными и финансовыми аспектами, это немного запутано поскольку мамина туристическая медицинская страховка не покроет сложную процедуру и восстановительный период.
